A New Generation of Farming
Fridlington Farms Ltd. is a family business which has farmed in the Sutton on the Forest area for 90 years and was founded by J L Fridlington. The land, situated in the Vale of York has a light and sandy nature which gives a good platform for growing root vegetables. The farm consists of c.1300 Hectares with a suitable 6-year rotation including grass leys, potatoes, wheat, linseed, brassica and barley.
Potatoes are a key crop for the business in total the farm plants and harvests c.380 Hectares. The potato crop is grown for processing with the farm supplying multiple outlets in the processing sector. The home farm has an irrigation licence which aids us in getting the best quality for our customers and limits our risks for the growing crop. A small amount of the potato crop is marketed at harvest, but the majority is stored in our own state of the art storage facilities. The farm can store up to 10,000 tonnes on site.
Of the farm c.240 Hectares are put down to grass on mainly a rotation system, this is to feed a 2,500 ewe flock which are on an Easycare system; this originates from New Zealand and Fridlington Farms has been using this system for nearly 30 years. The flock consists of Highlander/Aberfield/NZ Suffolk/Texel crosses.
The farm due to its sandy nature puts 5 year grass leys down to increase its organic carbon percentage (1.6% to 4.7%), this with the sheep living outdoors aids our natural total carbon stock in the ground which sits between 27.4 to 73.5t/ha. Over wintered on stubble turnips and fodder beet again helps with application of natural fertilisers.
We work very closely with governing bodies to help in lowering farm carbon and stopping farm pollutants into rivers with water course buffer strips and c.85 Hectares of trees which will increase in the coming years. Our permanent pastures have very low inputs with minimum amount of fertiliser used to stop leaching. The farm has 900,000kWh solar which is used to power its buildings with the excess fed back into the grid, again to help with the farms carbon footprint.

Fridlington Farms, Generations of Farmers
The original homestead of the farm was at Gypsy Wood near Dunnington. The farms acreage was around 147 and was sold in 1953.
The first land farmed at Fridlington Farms was that of Low Roans but the land wasn’t bought till 1941 and came to 306 acres.
After this first farm there were more to follow in very quick succession.

Our early commitment to the Entry Level Scheme and the Countryside Stewardship Scheme funded by Natural England has positively improved the Estates wildlife habitats. Options adopted in these schemes include: – 6 meter buffer strips, over winter stubble and pollen & nectar mixes which provide important habitat and additional food sources for birds, insects and bees. Rotational cutting of hedges and mowing of dykes has also improved habitats for nesting birds.
